Feedback some "interesting" churches in Singapore

Hi TL,

I've visited a few big/fast-growing churches in Singapore. I've included below some brief comments based on my observations during my visits to these churches.

I will reserve my comments on their teachings. You will have to hear them out for yourself.

1. CITY HARVEST CHURCH Highly motviated and fervent about winning people to Christ. Strong practical preaching/teaching from the pulpit by various pastors (the key one being the senior pastor). Vision-driven and well organised leadership. Young and dynamic congregation. Energetic praise and worship. Loud public prayers in tongues may be a culture shock/ turn-off for non charistmatics.

2. FCBC The "Cell Church" with strong ministries in community services - led by a "apostle who is also a magician/illusionist". Team of pastors deliver messages aimed at challenging/motivating the church into service for the Lord. Leadership is well respected but at times "controversial". Congregation consists of people from a wide range of age and race groups. Lively praise and worship. Some people may question the senior pastor's involvement in "controversial" stuff (magic show, mass media etc) and others not be comfortable with the senior pastor's alleged "authoritative" leadership style.

3. NEW CREATION CHURCH The "Grace Church". Highly interesting and engaging (some consider it as controversial) preaching/teaching mainly by the senior pastor focusing on Jesus Christ and the undeserved favours that come through Him to the believers from Father God. Leaders are seen as warm, friendly and approachable. Congregation comprises mainly young working adults. Lively worship. The church's strong emphasis on God's blessings may not be readily received by some who have labelled such messages as "sugar-coated" and "unbalanced".

4. LIGHTHOUSE EVANGELISM "Specialises" in divine healing with it's weekly Miracle Service on saturday evenings. Calm but inspiring delivery of sermons by the senior pastor with generous doses of healing testimonies from the congregation. Well experienced group of pastors at the helm. Congregation is a mix of young and old. Impressive praise and worship with graceful dancers and well rehersed band. Emphasis on healing testimonies may be perceived by as "gimmicky distractions" that draw people's attention away from the other important biblical truths.

I've chosen to visit them based on their size and/or impressive growth rate. My objective was to learn about the things that these churches are doing right which result in their growth. I believe I've learnt quite a good deal from the visits. Other "interesting" churches that I intend to visit are the Covenant Evangelical Free Church and the Church of Praise.

You may like to "explore" these churches yourself. I pray that your will enjoy and benefit from your visits.

Walk in His grace, Keith
