John Wesley drew lots about whether he should marry or not, and here is the story from his Journal of Mar 4th, 1737. "Having both of us (Mr Delamotte and himself) sought God by deep consideration, fastings, and prayer, in the afternoon we conferred together but could not come to any decision. We both apprehended Mr Ingham's objection to be the strongest, the doubt whether she was what she appeared. But this doubt was too hard for us to solve. At length we agreed to appeal to the Searcher of Hearts. I accordingly made three lots. In one was writ, "Marry": in the second "Think not of it this year". After we had prayed to God to "give a perfect lot", Mr Delamotte drew the third, in which were the words, "Think of it no more". Instead of the agnoy I had reason to expect I was enabled to say cheerfully "Thy will be done". We cast lots again to know whether I ought to converse with her any more and the direction I received from God was "Only in the presence of Mr Delamotte". I am quite amused by the above account but then I ought to be sympathatic towards John Wesley because he probably wouldn't have known the Theory of Probability. His problem was he limited the sample space to only three. I don't beleive God had anything to do with the outcome of the draw, especially the part about seeing the girl only in the presence of Mr Dalamotte. Sounds more Victorian than Bibilical to me. There is an easier way to dicide whether to marry a girl or not - take her to one of the most experience restaurants for a candle-light dinner and see whether you enjoy her company or not. It is quite elementary. I don't believe in casting lots. "God doesn't play dice", said Albert Einstein. |
