First thing you have to note that RC looks at Church as the whole 'People of God', and not just the clergy nor the pope. ++In the NT, the people of God are never categorised into the clergy and laity. And neither does the NT see the church in a hierarchical setup with the pope at the apex. You simply won’t find it in the NT. IIRC, the correct intepretation of the scriptures lies within the 'sense of the faithful', which is articulated through the teaching majesterium. ++Who comprises the teaching magisterium and where is the biblical sanction for such a setup? Most importantly, why should anyone listen to the magisterium? What they oppose is the individualistic intepretation of the Bible - this is how _I_ see it, and therefore this is how it should be read. ++Protestants also oppose to the individualistic interpretation of the Bible, but we do not discourage the individual from mining truths from the Bible on his own. Hopefully you can see the distinction. Likewise when the Bishop of Rome speaks ex cathedral, he speaks not for himself but rather having consulted the minds of the faithful, he is articulating the mind of the church. Sounds pretty reasonable... ++But not biblical. |
