Actually what we are talking about is not fear in the ususl sense of the word but phobia. There is quite a lot of stuff on the Net and you may want to read up on it. Then you'll understand why it is a serious matter. It really is a mental problem. There is a long list of phobias people can suffer from, some with serious consequences.

In order to solve a problem it is important to stay completely focused on the problem. Sexual sins belong to a totally different class of problems and so it is not wise to mix it with what we are discussing now. We are talking about is the devil.

My stand is that we are not to have anything to do with the devil which includes not fearing him at all and also having absolutely no communication with him whatsoever. However if a christian is directly confronted with something of the devil, e.g. somebody wants to cast a spell on him, I believe the christian is fully protected from such things. There is absolutely nothing to fear from curses, charms, witchcrafts, etc.

There is a certain denomination now which thrives by promoting the fear of the devil. It is called Satanophobia. I totally disagree with the practices of this denomination. Their preachers cannot even preach a sermon without first casting out the devil. I personally don't believe is such things. What counts is the content of the sermon and its delivery. A lousy sermon is useless whether you cast out any devil or not.

Some good preachers can preach without even praying before the sermon. They usually pray at the end of the sermon asking God to bless His word. I go for the content of the sermon. Can't be bothered with the devil and I am not interested in any devil business in the church. I thought a church is a place where you go to think about God but these days it seems to be different. I heard someone, who is now a retired preacher himself, said that nowadays they preach more about the devil than God, when he was asked why he no longer goes to that church.

The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. So certainly cannot mean creating psychological problems for yourself.

In order to understand all this you'll need to read up on phobias and what it can do to people. The fact that they can qoute Scriptures left and right makes no difference. Try convincing a fish that is is wet. It will be impossible because the fish wouldn't know what it means to be dry.

"And were this world all devils o'er,
  And watching to devour us,
 We lay it not to heart so sore;
  Not they can overpower us.
   And let the prince of ill
   Look grim as e'er he will,
   He harms us not a whit;
   For why? - his doom is writ;
 A word shall quickly slay him."
