Dear Prophet,
I would agree with you that to some extent, the rationality shared by most, though certainly not all adults, does not extend to children (esp in this TV-and movie infested age). However, your other points need some clarification. Yes, children are moulded by their environment. But in a case where a child is more "moulded" by any book (be it HP or Enid Blyton), I would say that his or her parents have failed somewhat in their duty to "mould" the child sufficiently in their own image, such that other influences can win over the child's inclinations. My own view, having read some of the books, is that magic in HP is more a parody than reflection of reality and eminently unreproducible in life (From what I have read of real covens and witchcraft, their brand of "magic" is much more subtle and deeper, such that one would not even guess that a close neighbour is of this group). I do not understand what you mean when you say, "If your thoughts is going to be moulded by HP, you will think as such." When you say that imaginations must be cast down, does that mean that we must ascertain that every single thought that comes to mind is from God, including where I will dine tonight? And that every indepedent thought and dream (including whatever ideas I have generate for school compositions and company presentations) is carnal? You asked Evehow, "...can there be a 'good' evil such as white magic or good socerers? If it is not of God.....??? Why are you making degrees of relativity of evil?" I don't think that is what she is saying. She seems to be asking whether or not you regard a depiction of evil in fiction to be enough for a Christian to label a book or work as "evil" as well. I seriously do not see any link between HP (and most other fantasy fiction) with making kids cross fire, use divination, enchantment, cast charms or consult spirits. Granted, children in non believer families are wont to act out the mannerisms of fictional heroes (and who are we to stop them), but I think children of truly Godly parents would know where fantasy and reality meet. (But if you know of any authenticated cases of someone falling into witchcraft through the sole influence of HP, I would be interested to know and revise my assessment) Also, I fail to understand why HP seems to be the target of such holy derision. Why not attack in equal fervour the Narnian Chronicles, the wizards of Middle-Earth, the Wicked Witch of the West and Moonface (an Egyptian deity if there ever was) of Enid Blyton's Enchanted Forest? Now that would be truly amusing.
