Hi Ivan,

I am afraid I am unconvinced by your definition. I would concur with you should the issue be about a book with a title like "How to be a witch" or "The secrets of true magic" etc...

However, to me, books like HP (if you have taken the trouble to read at least one) are pure fiction, nothing more, nothing less - imaginary parallel worlds so to say. It belongs to the same category as the Wizard of Oz, the Lord of the Rings, the Narnian Chronicles, Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tales, the Brothers Grimm, Enid Blyton's stories, Terry Pratchett's Discworld series or Frank Herbert's Dune - in effect stories of a fantasy world where "magical" elements are taken for granted as part of daily life.

Some children are certainly likely to want to imagine and depict themselves living in such a world (esp given the dreary reality of real life), but in a milieu where parents, school and church peers take the effort to draw a clear distinction between fiction and reality, I see no reason to chatise the reading of such books. Of course, you are free to NOT read HP as well as forbid your own children from doing so. But it seems to me that to be consistent, you would have to do likewise for every other work where "magic" is potrayed, as the sheer presence of spells, witches, wizards, trolls and evil, scheming masterminds is sufficient for a work to be condemned as "promoting the occult."

----

JD,

May I ask where exactly did Evehow say that she would teach her kids to cast spells and that it's ok to do so? Your (and Ivan's) rather sorry attempt to cast two Eves in the same light also indicates to me a sore inability to convince with reason, much less Biblical authority. Hitting below the belt, if i may say so.
