You did a good job in categorising the types of readers so that they know where they belong. The segment on "How to read a book" is indeed informative and insightful. Your implications and insinuations are marvellously executed.
<<<You say: So, then, a person skilled at this level should be free to make his own conclusions based on his own analysis. And when there is disagreement between two such persons, then it is fair to agree to disagree. The ability to recognise when there is insufficient data to conclude with absolute certainty either view is part of this skill of reading comparatively. >>> As Christians, you know what is abominable to God and what is acceptable to God. Better still, if you know the baits of satan that are so suggestively and deliciously presented in whatever form, you will spare yourself much sorrow and not bring shame to the name of God. My suggestion is be harsh with it and give it a death sentence swiftly for evil to be eradicated. When it comes to witchcraft and pornography, there is no need for comparative skill. By all means, use your comparative skill in comparing other religions if you are matured in the Lord to do so and to interest them to discuss about Christianity. <<<You say: It is clear that both parties agree that the ability to read comparatively and with discernment is an essential and critical skill which even children should be equipped with. Now, it would be meaningless to tell our children that they should first learn all the facts about a case, then compare it critically to what the bible teaches before making any conclusions, and then disallow them to open that very book they are asked to compare with the bible. What about the danger of the frog which got boiled in slow-boiling fire? Well, perhaps for children, we should also first determine at which level each child is capable of reading before we put Harry Potter into his hands. >>> May I suggest, as parents we should ground our children in the Bible re what God hates and what God pleases. Then our children will grow up knowing good from evil. They will not call good as evil and evil as good. When the parents also having to know good and evil will tell the children that witchcraft is abominable to God and HP books which is a manual on witchcraft practice which is subtlely portrayed as fairy tales, then they should be avoided altogether; no need to compare (fullstop). Better to be a frog in the well than ended up a boiled frog. <<<You say: So, the question is really, does Harry Potter rate G, PG, or R(A). I doubt even Eveline and bluemarc would rate the book G. What I hear is that it is at least PG. Perhaps JD and Ivan would rate it R(A) or worst, Beyond Death. >>> I thought you miss out another category : RA(BAD) which stands for Really Abominable(Burn And Destroy). HP books which promote witchcraft ought to come under this category. <<<You say: The point is that no one, I believe, rates Harry Potter G. If the book is really that bad, then our children should know why it is so. If the parents feel that the danger can be adequately conveyed to their children without the need for the children to read the offensive material themselves, then the parents should not be criticised. >>> Agreed. <<<You say: On the other side, if the parents wish their children to first read and understand the offensive material (this does not apply to Playboy - there is nothing really much to read, only pictures, although a case can be make for reading it) and then they personally supervise the thinking process, then these parents should also be left to do what they think is fit. >>> Yes, parents are responsible and accountable to God for the upbringing of their children. I really don't know how parents can supervise the children's thinking process. It is better to do it God's way - fill their minds with the word of God and they will give you peace. The Bible says, "Great is the peace of your children for they shall be taught of the Lord." We teach them the word of God and the Lord in turn will teach them. "Unless the Lord builds the house they labour in vain who build it". We do well to build up the children with the Biblical principles and they will bring delight to your souls. <<<You say: The fact that Harry Potter is influential and popular does mean that we should not throw caution to the wind but to shield our children entirely from whatever danger it poses is also not the prudent way to prepare our children for their own journey through life. >>> If we follow God's ways, we do not even have to tell our children not to read HP books, they themselves will avoid them like a plague. They will be wise to read books that will spur them on to greater heights and contribute positively to society.
