Wow, looks like I've got a very "unglorifying" library in my home, with shelves of books full of subject matter ranging from food and drink (including alcohol), madness (think Doestoesvky and Kafka), suicide (think Goethe and Hamlet), blasphemy (think Salman Rushdie), magical fantasy (think Frank Herbert and Tolkien), drug-addicts (think Stan Getz), ungodly ideologies (think Sartre, Mein Kampf and the Communist Manifesto), pagan myths (think Homer, Euripides and Journey to the West), sensuality (think Nin and Kundera), anti-Semites (think Wagner) and unsubmission to authority (think the Good Soldier Svejk). And of course Mr Potter himself, tucked away in some corner. I even have some "true" fantasy fiction as well (think Chuck Missler and Hal Lindsey), although I haven't gotten round to Tim LaHaye's Left Behind series - probably in the next lifetime.
I'd like to think, though, that my Bibles (NIV, NASB, NEB, RSB, KJV etc) sit very well with these other reading materials. Come to think of it, barring an English hymn collection, my CD library is full of stuff that was once referred to as the "Devil's Musick" aka Jazz and Blues. The sweet stuff they feed me in Crest gives me spiritual diabetes. I suppose, in the eyes of some, that makes me a poor Christian and even witness. It's fine with me - I don't get mad and bluster with righteous indignance when people respond to reasoned discourse and calls for understanding before condemnation (based on hearsay from a few certain "authorities" rather than earnest self-motivated examination) with desperate attempts at using Biblical verses to mask what's probably just a personal, bigoted dislike, which seems hypocritical, since these folks don't seem to apply their same critical (uncritical rather) standards everywhere.
