I am sure lots of christians would have asked this question. My answer is I don't know. I think it depends on what the prayer is. My observation is christians are usually not exempted form things which are happening to the rest of the society in which they live. Getting a job is closely tied up with the state of the economy and for us it is certainly tied up with the US economy. So I think we'll just have to wait. God is the ruler of the whole world and not just the christians only. The non-christians also do His will without them knowing it. Unless we get a correct view of God's relationship with the whole creation we are in danger of having a tribal god just like in other religions. The God of the Bible is not a tribal god but the One who made the heavens and the earth. Modern christianity sort of teaches that this world is now under the devil's control because of Adams fall and God is no longer in control. It is not so according to historical christianity. We are now living is very fast changing times. Everything is chainging so fast. The education system is going to change and many traditional careers will be phased out very soon. This will also include the graduate and professional jobs. Christians ought to prepare themselves for all these changes which are coming soon. If you don't, you will be left out. Those chrisians who attend those "heavenly minded" churches will be seriously affected. My observation is that they don't teach you how to live in this world. They seem to think faith alone will solve every problem. But the Bible says faith without works is dead. (Not talking about salvation). The Bible does talk about one's work. It says those who don't work shouldn't eat. Lady Margaret Thatcher was a strong believer in this. It is God's will for the christian to work. But the modern preachers seem to be only interested in people going into full-time service for the Lord. They don't seem to see secular work as an important part of our christian calling. It wasn't so in ages past. "Teach me, my God and King, In all things thee to see; And in what I do in anything To do it as for Thee. All may of Thee partake; Nothing can be so mean Which, with this tincture, 'For Thy sake', Will not grow bright and clean. A servant with this clause Makes drudgery divine; Who sweeps a room, as for Thy laws, Makes that and the action fine. This is the famous stone That turneth all to gold; For that which God doth touch and own Cannot for less be told." May be all of us ought to take another look at our secular work and see it as part of our christian calling. We should do our best and do it as unto God and leave the results to God. We should be honest in our job and fair with our colleagues. We are taught to pray, "Give us this day our daily bread" but we have to work as well. Otherwise we don't eat. Note, in order to get a job and work one has to be qualified and trained. So one has to prepare for it by studying whenever one has the opportunity. Nowadays is it is continual upgrading. The good old days of job security are over. We have to face the real world while we are here. God Bless. |
