That a nonbeliever would want to feel comfortable in the meeting of God's people? Maybe it is today's church culture to make their services as seeker-friendly as possible, with the mega-watt smiles, the best in sight, visual and audio, which gives nonbelievers the same comsumer mentality that many of the believers have as well. My friend, church meetings are NOT and were NEVER meant for nonbelievers. Read for yourself in the NT! Church meetings are by definition the meeting of God's people, the church. So who does that exclude? Church meetings should never be designed for nonbelievers when you have understood the purpose of church meetings. Does that mean then that nonbelievers CANNOT come? That's not true. The NT talks about nonbelievers coming into a church meeting (you may need to do a little research into how first century homes were like to appreciate this point better). They either think the church is crazy and leave or they call upon the Lord for their salvation. What doesn't happen is that the church suddenly gets conscious and somehow try to make their meetings palatable to the taste of the nonbeliever so as not to offend him. Sad to say, that's what usually happens nowadays. To get people to join them, meetings become seeker-friendly at the expense of (real) church life. The services become nonbeliever centred rather than Christ-centred. What happened at Corinth was that Paul urged the church to exercise self-imposed order in their meetings, to use gifts that edify those present. When nonbelievers enter, they will encounter the church in action, God moving in their midst. They will see church life as God intended. What they won't see is church showmanship. |
