I have been to many church services before and I must admit that as a visitor, that sense of being an "unknown" and seeing strangers for the first time does not make for a comfortable worship experience. The only way is to imagine the people around are nonexistent and it is just me and my Lord. But how biblical is that? Now, even if I go back to my former church of ten over years, I will also not feel comfortable worshipping there. And the reason for it is twofold. One, church meetings are not primarily worship services as far as the NT is concerned. Second, such worship services do not fit with 1 Cor 14:26. As long as one or a few people are directing the meeting, the congregation is just a passive-reactive people on the pews, doing what one author calls "the thousand yard stare". |
