Hi all,
Just voicing my grievances...i have been out of job for past 2 months...i have tried applying for many jobs by posting on the net, thru various agencies and thru phone...you know what is the most replies I get? "WE NEED ONLY PEOPLE SPEAKING CHINESE".
You see, I'm an Indian...And I don't understand why when this nation which is predominantly educated English speaking nation needs Chinese speaking employees...o,k,o.k, if you are serving a particular group of people who speaks only Chinese, then I would think this is acceptable...but I have been applying for jobs that cater to young students, and it's just plain customer service jobs...C'mon, most if not all students speak at least basic English, and the job is just to explain students the course details. I may be over qualified for the job, judging from my experience, but I was willing to take a massive pay cut becos' i need to fill my stomach. Moreover, with the bills piling up, i have absolutely no idea what to do. I'm actually judged by my colour or that I'm over qualified...this is pure nonsense. My Chinese friends get defensive when I tell them there is such a sutuation, but they r not going thru it...we are, the minorities. i'm trying not to work in areas where I might compromise, for e.g bars n such. As it is, being a Christian is difficult, where a life of cutting corners will be frowned upon. But this is the truth. There is bigotry, and esp in times like these, it's more apparent, when employers are looking for "their Kind". I give u another example. I used to give IT professionals to companies. This lady for a very reputable local telecom company actually said she needed non-Indians becos she felt that the place was a total "blackout" becos' there were alot of Indians working there...and the joke was that she thought she was speaking to a Chinese guy, and that's just becos' i spoke sparsely Mandarin. I can give you many examples. And I rest my case. I can agree that these cases are far few and between...but apparently I get the most. I have another friend who has a degree and has been looking for a job for more than a year. Not that we are choosy, but we get crap answers like that. "WE NEED ONLY CHINESE". So my friend did take Mandarin, hoping that it wud change, but apparently it didn't. All I'm asking is for equal opportunity for Singaporeans. Look thru the ads today, and you will still see the ads asking for Mandarin speakers. This will never change, no matter what the Govt. says. And no, we are not choosy. We just need an income that will able to put food on our tables. The latest job expos are just a complete laugh. Remember, I said that I'm over qualified. I only have A-levels with managerial experience for the past 5 years. The jobs that they put up are for lower secondary and with relevant experience. I like to be proved wrong in my observations and get a job. I hope, prayerfully, that someone sees this, and offer me a job where I can sustain my family during this turbulent times...and I will be eternally grateful for that. God bless Daniel
