Guess we have to define Jews correctly before we start. I believe the definition in Britannica encyclopaedia is good enough.
The Jews only know one faith in Judaism prior to Christainity. The Jews in Christ's days were already not of all the 12 tribes with some 10 tribes assimilated during the end of the Northern Kingdom. As long as there is a remnant of Jacob's descendents returning to modern day Israel, it constitute a Jewish state in my opinion. I have not done much research into the history of the Jewish people down the centuries, but it is hard to imagine the majority being converts and not somehow through the bloodline.
