Sins of the WHOLE world

1 John 2:1
My little children, these things write I unto you that ye may not sin. And if any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2:2and he is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the whole world. To answer the issue of 'Sins of the WHOLE wolrd' (a) a propitiation is a sacrifice intended to appease the wrath of God. Christ's death, as our representative, actually is the basis on which the hostility between God and man is removed. If he actually was the propitiation for the sins of the whole world without exception, then God can no longer justly be angry toward anyone. Yet we know this is not the case (Rom. 1:18 etc.) So "the whole world" cannot be understood as meaning literally "all people in the world". (b) so in what sense can Jesus' death be considered an atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world? In the sense that his atonement is complete, lacking nothing which would make it inapplicable to a sinner anywhere in the world. It was not just for John and his community, but for all God's chosen wherever they may be. A Hindu in India who comes to Christ will find his atonement to be just as sufficient a propitiation for his sins as the agnostic in Chicago who comes to Christ will. -JD
