The One Needful Thing

Luke 10: 38-42
38 Now as they went on their way, he entered a village; and a woman named Martha received him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." 41 But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; 42 one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her." ------------------------ If there is one thing that you need to do in this new year, what would it be? The Bible tells us that God seeks worshippers. He seeks worshippers who are obsessed with Him. He wants us to enjoy His presence. He wants to bless us with His life-giving Word. He wants us to serve Him and His people out of His abundance. He does not seek workers who are obsessed with work. We need to realise that we can never work our way into God's favour. It is God's gracious favour on us that enable us to work at all. We need to be humble enough to acknowledge that we can never love God (and others) genuinely unless we first accept His love for us; that we can never give anything of worth to Him (and others) unless we receive from His abundance; that we can never properly serve Him (and others) if we refuse to let Him serve us and wash our feet. Fix our eyes on the Lover who loves us so extravagantly, and we shall love. Focus on the Blessor who blesses us so abundantly, and we shall bless. The most effective servant is the one who knows how to be served by the Servant King Himself. Ministry is an overflowing of God's fullness in us. Mary has chosen to sit at Jesus' feet. To listen to His comforting Words. To gaze into His Loveliness. To enjoy His wonderful Presence. Between work and worship, Mary chose worship. Mary chose to be obsessed with Jesus above everything else. Mary has chosen to do the one needful thing - the good portion which shall not be taken away from her. What about us? I pray that for the year 2002, the church will focus on doing the one needful thing that Mary did for which she was commended by the Lord. Blessings, Keith
