I speak for myself and not for any church. Which church I attend has no bearing on my opinion. My pastor knows me well and trusts me in that my opinions arise out of careful consideration, not just because of convention. For this I am grateful... he has never attempted to impose his personal views on anyone he believes who is sensible to make up his or her own mind.

Neither do I seek to impose my views on others, unlike many "well-meaning" but woefully mistaken Christians. For example, alcohol is not bad by itself; it's the abuse of alcohol that is. Yet there are some who advocate a total ban of alcohol on Christians because "it is sinful", and worst still, quote Scriptures in support. THERE IS NO SCRIPTURE STATING THAT ALCOHOL IS BAD OR THAT THE CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL IS SINFUL. I detest it when people twist Scriptures to make their lives easier, instead of properly going through intelligent reasoning why alcohol MAY be bad for you.

Same thing for television, music, etc.

I am assuming that those who read this board can THINK. When I write my posts, I assume that those who read them have some intelligence to understand the reasoning I am putting through. It would have been SO easy for me to reduce every issue to a black-and-white one; "yes" or "no" and "can" or "cannot." Can watch R(A) movie? Can. Can go to Turf Club? Cannot.

But I refuse to, because I believe people can think, and should think. Spoonfeeding is so easy for the feeder and satisfying for the fed, as long as the gruel is nice and the guy stays obedient. But those who dare would change the recipie, let the guy feed himself, or even teach him how to cook his own food so that he can have a choice of his meal.

What kind of God have we got that would reduce our lives to a series of yes and no, can and cannot? Yet I am thankful that in His grace He allows us to experience lifes our own way. I'm not using "our own way" in the sense that we can disregard God's specific command for our own pleasure. Instead, God allows us to have unique experiences so that we may understand Him and His will from our unique point of view. One does NOT have to participate in youth groups or CG to experience God; therefore no one should be compelled to participate in such activities and be made to feel guilty if he or she does not want to. Simple as that.

How many times have Singaporeans been criticised for not being able to think for themselves? Yet when alternative views are expressed, censorious voices are heard trying to clamp them down, primarily by discrediting the messenger. Singaporeans are not labelled "narrow minded" (I heard this comment from some expats) for nothing.

The thread to which I contributed was the one where some person said his pastor owns G-strings. To those who felt discomfort when reading that pastors wear G-strings, ask yourselves why. Is there some sub-conscious prejudice about pastors which influenced you, the same way when confronted with the "pastor driving big cars and stay in big house" issue? When I read responses to questions like this, the underlying prejudice is what I'm trying to sift out.
