Dear Eveline, After I put out the message about tomorrow being Sunday, I have actually forgotten the whole thing. But now that you have something to say, let's see? I think you should inteprete the text of the Bible in the Gramatico-Historical sense but not the message. The message of the Bible must be interpreted in the 21st century sense or you'll get it wrong. I don't want to elaborate on this. Anyway it is difficult to explain. So as usaual, will keep it to myself. Don't worry about Santa Mornica. She is not the main cause of the problem. Otherwise it would have happened long ago. It is the "normal" people who have made the matter blow up to such an extent. Anyway I have really forgotten about the whole thing. Oh yes, I am surprised that you don't know what the "Scientific Method" is. I thought everybody knows about it. The Testing of Hypothesis seems to be difficult and I have even Maths graduates telling me that it is difficult to understand. If you want to do this sort of subjects, I think you have to have a good grasp of the Theory of Probablity. It does not mean that the Scientific Method is not accurate. What it means is that the Test of Hypothesis doesn't prove the Hypothesis because it is possible to make a Type I or Type II Error. Remember you only have a sample. But it is possible to quantify the probability of these Errors and the idea is to make the probablity of Type I Error as small as possible while making the Power of the Test as high as possible. This is just one of the Tests. There are other tests including Test of Significance and Non-parametric tests. Okay, if all this sounds Greek to you, don't worry. It does to a lot of people. The other very important aspect of the Scientific Method is the Design of the Experiment. Unless the experiment is properly designed the results will not show the true state of affairs. So it is usually Observation, Hypothesis, Deduction of consequence, Experimentation and Rejection or modification of Hypothesis. What you can do is to start reading on Probability and Statistics and if you can follow these subjects you will definitely have more convolutions on your brains. It will definitely change your thinking ability; you will think in terms of probablity. No more just yes/no or black/white. There is a whole range between these two extremes. Take for example the concept of race. What is race and who belongs to what race? And what is one's real colour? Are you sure you are a Chinese? And are sure you really yellow? Do you belong to the Chinese race? What makes you think so? The real reason why I read these subjects is because I want to make sure that nobody can bluff me. Statistical Reasoning is a sure method to protect yourself from being bluffed by anyone. Oh yes, Statistics can also deal with Theology, Law, etc. A very light book which might interest you is "How to lie with Statistics" by Duff. But this is very elementary and non-mathematical. It is chicken stuff but it will open your eyes to some of the ways people bluff. You can get it at the what's the name Bookshop. Bye bye:- |
