A1.     Bold, Boldness, Boldly [Verb]

tharreo a later form of tharseo (see CHEER, COMFORT), is connected with thero, "to be warm" (warmth of temperament being associated with confidence); hence, "to be confident, bold, courageous;" RV, invariably, "to be of good courage;" 2_Cor_5:6,8 (AV, "to be confident"); 2_Cor_7:16 (AV, "to have confidence"); 2_Cor_10:1,2 (AV, "to be bold"); Heb_13:6, AV, "boldly;" RV, "with good courage" (lit., "being courageous"). A2.     Bold, Boldness, Boldly [Verb]

parrhesiazomai "to speak boldly, or freely," primarily had reference to speech (see parrhesia), but acquired the meaning of "being bold, or waxing bold," 1_Thess_2:2; in Acts_13:46, RV, "spake out boldly" (the aorist participle here signifies "waxing bold"); Acts_9:27,29, "preached boldly (see also Acts_18:26; Acts_19:8); in Acts_26:26, "speak freely." A3.     Bold, Boldness, Boldly [Verb]

tolmao signifies "to dare to do, or to bear, something terrible or difficult;" hence, "to be bold, to bear onself boldly, deal boldly;" it is translated "be bold" in 2_Cor_10:2, as contrasted with tharreo in 2_Cor_10:1, and the first line of 2_Cor_10:2, "shew courage" (see tharreo); in 2_Cor_10:12, RV, "are not bold to," for AV, "dare not make ourselves of." Tharreo denotes confidence in one's own powers, and has reference to character; tolmao denotes boldness in undertaking and has reference to manifestation (Thayer). See COURAGE, DARE.

apotolmao apo (intensive), with tolmao, means "to be very bold, to speak out boldly," and is used in Rom_10:20.


B1.     Bold, Boldness, Boldly [Noun]

parrhesia from pas, "all," rhesis, "speech" (see parrhesiazomai), denotes
(a) primarily, "freedom of speech, unreservedness of utterance," Acts_4:29,31; 2_Cor_3:12; 2_Cor_7:4; Php_1:8; or "to speak without ambiguity, plainly," John_10:24; or "without figures of speech," John_16:25;
(b) "the absence of fear in speaking boldly; hence, confidence, cheerful courage, boldness, without any connection necessarily with speech;" the RV has "boldness" in the following; Acts_4:13; Eph_3:12; 1_Tim_3:13; Heb_3:6; Heb_4:16; Heb_10:19,35; 1_John_2:28; 1_John_3:21; 1_John_4:17; 1_John_5:14;

tolmeroteros the comparative degree of tolmeros, means "the more boldly," Rom_15:15; in some texts, tolmeroteron. Cp. tolmao. Cp. tolmetes, "presumptuous," RV, "daring," 2_Pet_2:10.
