haireo "to take," is used in the Middle Voice only, in the sense of taking for oneself, choosing, 2_Thess_2:13, of a "choice" made by God (as in Deut_7:6,7; Deut_26:18, Sept.); in Php_1:22; Heb_11:25, of human "choice." Its special significance is to select rather by the act of taking, than by showing preference or favor.

hairetizo akin to the verbal adjective hairetos, "that which may be taken" (see haireo), signifies "to take," with the implication that what is taken is eligible or suitable; hence, "to choose," by reason of this suitability, Matt_12:18, of God's delight in Christ as His "choosen."
